From October 2016 through August 2019, I served as first managing editor and then editorial director of Sonoma magazine, a bimonthly magazine covering Sonoma County. I created the magazine’s content lineup, assigned and edited all articles, managed the editorial and production schedules, and collaborated closely with our creative director on design.
For our March/April 2017 issue, we marked the end of California’s drought—thanks to the wettest winter in two decades—with a cover story on where to see the county’s most stunning waterfalls. Another feature visited a mostly Latino elementary school where vandals spray-painted graffiti reading “Build the wall higher” during the final days of the November election. We explored the inspiring ways that both students and the larger community responded to the bigotry.
